Remember that story we had a few weeks ago about the Thackston Park land swap?

Or for that matter the years of wrangling to get the York city deal done?

Well, officials have provided a release with more information about that project, which they say is quickly moving forward.

According to that news release, from the York Housing Authority, the deal provides a list of benefits for York city. Those include:

  • Closed on Friday, September 28, 2012, $12 million, 39 unit tax credit housing – Homes at Thackston Park; affordable housing not public housing; rents range from $300-$900.
  • Cooperation between York Housing Authority (YHA), City of York, Creating Opportunities in Neighborhood Environments, Inc. (CONE), and Enterprise Community Investment Inc. (private investor brought 10 million to deal and PHFA).
  • York Housing Authority will manage the property.
  • Take down 28 units of public housing at Codorus and put up 39 units of tax credit housing at Thackston Park.
  • Housing Authority and City swapped land to create affordable housing and create a river walk park.
  • Park to be developed along river by the city and its non-profit designee.
  • This will create affordable housing in the neighborhood, jobs, and purchase of goods and services in York; 10 million in construction hard and soft costs, high architectural design in keeping with architectural integrity of the neighborhood.

This is certainly something we’ll follow in the days ahead, but for now it seems worth noting that, as reported, the project is moving forward and will bring big changes to several parts of the city.

The housing authority says there will be a groundbreaking ceremony later this month.

That sounds good, but as always it will be more interesting to see what people who live (or lived) in those areas think of the changes, when it comes time to pack up their belongings, or settle into a new home.

A bright new destination is nice, but it’s generally the journey that makes the story.
